Our Effective Mobile Marketing Awards celebrate the best and brightest that the industry has to offer, and as a part of that, we think its important that the industry itself has a voice in who receives our coveted awards.

With that in mind, our Peoples Choice categories let the mobile marketing industry vote for a winner from our shortlist of deserving nominees. Voting has already begun, but this week, well be shining a spotlight on each of the different Peoples Choice categories to give you more information before you make your decision.

Once youre ready to vote, head to our survey to pick your winners before midnight UK time on Friday 5 October. The Peoples Choice winners will be announced alongside the rest of our Awards at our lavish ceremony on Thursday 15 November. You can book your place at this annual highlight here.

Adidas
At the close of last year, Adidas announced that it was closing down its wearable hardware unit, hardly the kind of move that suggests a mobile-first brand, but the closure was part of a strategic shift by the firm towards sports and fitness software. With fitness tracking platforms available under both its Adidas and Runtastic brands, the company focused on providing consumers with hardware-agnostic tools, as well as launching a new mCommerce app.

The firm has also focused on mobile with its advertising, embracing platforms like Snapchat and Pinterest as new ways of reaching consumers. With the World Cup in the summer, the brand used Bitmoji to connect with fans following the tournament, and in the autumn, a new deal with Twitter saw it streaming nationally-ranked high school football teams in the US.

BMW
As a leading automotive brand and pioneer in the connected car space, BMW holds a special place in the world of mobile marketing. The car is an increasingly important environment for digital marketing, both in terms of the data that can be gathered there and as a channel for reaching consumers, and BMW has led developments on both these fronts.

Early in the year it combined forces with Daimler to unite their mobility services divisions, as well as purchasing parking app Parkmobile to combat traffic through big data. BMW was the first brand to use Snapchat’s ‘augmented trial’ lens to promote its X2 model in North America and Europe, and at the start of September, the firm revealed it plans to launch a voice assistant next year, offering a new generation of intelligent control and connection inside its vehicles.

Diageo
Drinks brand Diageo has emerged as a crusader for improved brand safety and transparency over the last 12 months. In December 2017, the company pulled back ad spending from digital media and laid out a strict set of requirements for ad tech companies wishing to draw it back, including zero tolerance of ad fraud, 70 per cent viewability and transparent pricing models.

In an industry that often fails to hold itself to account, Diageo was willing to demand improvements, and found ad tech firms that were willing to put their solutions to the test. The step back from digital also gave Diageo space to rethink its priorities, and at the same time it pushed for better benchmarks in brand safety and ad fraud, it also embraced innovations like AI and explored new formats like voice and personalised video.

KLM
As you might expect with an aircraft operator, KLM always seems to have one eye on the horizon, looking to the most cutting-edge mobile marketing methods to reach consumers and improve the experiences of customers. In addition to innovation, the firm has kept a tight focus on utility, knowing that providing travellers with value is a key way to ensure high retention and a customer base that keeps spending money.

The past year has seen the company launch a Facebook chatbot to provide customers with help booking and a voice-controlled booking channel on Google Assistant. It has integrated Google Pay support into its Android app, and most recently added a new feature that allows travellers to test their luggage size using augmented reality.

LOréal
Encompassing a huge family of brands, the L’Oréal Group has explored a wide variety of mobile and digital marketing avenues over the past year. Its digital strategy has been guided by Cockpit, a newly-developed tool that measures the ROI and productivity of its media investments, ensuring decisions are based on performance and ad spend is optimised.

Cockpit was developed with cloud business Domo after the company brought its ad tech stack in-house to help improve control and transparency, and since then, the firm has pursued a digital-first mindset. Programmatic spending is up, and company also acquired ModiFace, an AR and AI specialist that has enabled it to deliver unique customer experiences across its portfolio of brands.

LEGO
With its young target audience, LEGO can’t afford to be slow when it comes to embracing the latest mobile and digital has to offer, and the toy giant certainly hasn’t been resting on its laurels this year. After bringing its creative operations in-house several years ago, LEGO has been building advanced capabilities designed to manage its media spending and data analytics, and this year it has focused on improving efficiency, integration and speed.

The firm has also delivered exciting mobile experiences to customers, working with Tencent to develop games, content and a child-friendly social platform, and rolling out an AI-powered chatbot for the festive season designed to help adults and kids alike with gift guidance. LEGO is even helping to prepare the next generation of ad tech engineers with its LEGO Boost sets, which integrate play with an introduction to developing.

Stay tuned for more spotlights on our Peoples Choice categories throughout the week, and dont forget to vote here before midnight on Friday 5 October.

Our Effective Mobile Marketing Awards celebrate the best and brightest that the industry has to offer, and as a part of that, we think its important that the industry itself has a voice in who receives our coveted awards.

Voting has already begun, but this week, well be shining a spotlight on each of the different Peoples Choice categories to give you more information before you make your decision.

Once youre ready to vote, head to our survey to pick your winners before midnight UK time on Friday 29 September. The Peoples Choice winners will be announced alongside the rest of our Awards at our lavish ceremony on Thursday 16 November. You can book your place at this annual highlight here.

Mobile Marketer of the Year
Milton Elias, Head of Mobile & Video, News UK – Milton will be familiar to many in the mobile world, having worked in the space since joining Publicis Groupe’s Phonevalley in 2008. Since then, he has held Head of Mobile roles at OMD and Starcom MediaVest Group, and served as a jury member for the Mobile Lions in 2016. His new role at News UK, which he began at the start of the year, puts him in charge of mobile and video advertising product strategy across all of the publisher’s brands, including The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times.

Susanne Jones, Managing Director, Isobar UK – Susanne joined Isobar UK as the agency’s MD in 2016, and steered the Dentsu Aegis-owned firm from strength to strength, overseeing campaigns for Uniqlo, Royal Carribbean and Sony. She also assisted in the global launch of Isobar Commerce, the agency’s series of commerce-focused centres of excellence located around the globe. Prior to Isobar, Susanne spent ten years at Critical Mass, rising to the position of senior vice president and global client partner for Citigroup.

Annabel Kilner, Commercial Director, Made.com – Annabel’s vision for furniture brand Made.com has helped transform the company, driving it to embrace social media as an effective marketing channel and create physical retail experiences that blend seamlessly with digital services. Since joining the firm in 2012, she has served to craft the company into a true omnichannel brand that has gone from success to success, and never hesitated to integrate cutting-edge technology into the firm’s customer-centred marketing strategy.

Michelle McEttrick, Group Brand Director, Tesco – Michelle might just be the authority on helping brands that have lost their way rediscover their message. While at ad agency BBH, she helped to reinvigorate the British Airways brand, before moving on to serve as CMO of global retail banking and MD of group brand and marketing at Barclays as it sought to redefine itself in the wake of the financial crisis. Now, Michelle has helped turn around the fortunes of Tesco, re-establishing the brand in the mind of British consumers with new initiatives, services and a focus on trust.

Andrew Morsy, UK Managing Director, Sizmek – Andrew has helped Sizmek achieve one of its most successful years yet since his appointment as managing director in February. The firm has announced a global programmatic partnership with Adyoulike to expand the reach of its StrikeAd platform, and has acquired predictive marketing platform Rocket Fuel to strengthen its analytics offering for clients. Morsy has been with the company since 2013, following stints at Yahoo and Struq, and rose up through StrikeAd, developing a keen knowledge of the programmatic landscape.

Tom Pearman, Manager for Partner Development, Search Ads UK, Apple – For most of this year, Tom was at Weve, which he joined in 2012 as director of brand and business development. He has more than proved his talent and hard work in the sector, overseeing multiple award-winning campaigns and helping manage Weve’s transition following its acquisition by O2, as the company’s moved into the programmatic space. During this period, he also lead the mobile marketing industry as a board member at both the IAB and MMA. Now moving to Apple, were excited to see what he has planned for the future.

Ad or Martech Platform of the Year

AdColony – When Opera Mediaworks sold off its browser business in 2016, the Opera name went with it, and the remaining ad tech parts of the firm elected to trade under the name AdColony. Following the rebrand at the tail end of last year, the company has been acting with renewed energy and focus, entering into a strategic partnership with NinthDecimal for location intelligence, launching its new Aurora HD Video format for interactive and immersive mobile ads, and teaming with brands including UFC, Disney and Hyundai for innovative campaigns.

Celtra – Celtra saw a significant vote of confidence in its operations in the middle of the year when industry giant WPP and FMCG powerhouse Unilever both took minority stakes in the firm during a $15m (£11.3m) financing round. The digital ad platform’s AdCreator solution powers marketing for 3,500 brands and has been used to create 250,000 ads so far, with 2017 partners including Pepsi, Microsoft and Toyota. The company also worked alongside Google as part of the Accelerated Mobile Pages project, developing ads that provided consumers with a faster, smoother browsing experience.

Pollen VC – Pollen VC aims to help mobile developers finance their operations during their earliest days, providing early access to app store and advertising revenues to enable firms to scale quickly and efficiently without having to rely on equity funding. The company’s Financial Forecaster tool helps businesses predict their cash flow for the year ahead, and the firm also offers user acquisition support, cohort analysis and other marketing tools to help emerging businesses find their feet. This year, the company has refined its financial prediction tools to provide developers with even more insights and ensure its backing the right firms.

Rubicon Project – Programmatic marketplace Rubicon Project didn’t start the year in the best position, having cut a fifth of its workforce in November 2016 and with president Greg Raifman and six other executives departing in February. However, the company has achieved an impressive turn-around this year, appointing a new CEO in the form of Michael Barrett, acquiring nToggle to boost efficiency and transparency, and partnering with AppNexus for open-source header bidding solutions. With programmatic firmly embedded in the heart of mobile, this veteran firm is hoping its experience and knowledge will guide it to success.

S4M – French firm S4M is celebrating several significant achievements this year that have seen it strengthen its position in the industry. In February, the company acquired mobile-first DSP Netadge to enhance its programmatic offerings, and earlier this month it partnered with location specialists Factual to track ad engagement against real-world footfall. In between then, the company has also led the fight back against ad fraud, enabled campaigns for global brands like Subway, debuted cutting-edge mobile ad formats and expanded its presence in Europe, the US and Asia.

Snap – You cant really talk about this year without mentioning Snap. From its $33bn IPO at the beginning of the year to its move into exclusive video content with media partners like NBC, Time Warner and CNN, the firm has led the way in innovation and captured the attention of the millennial and youth audiences so valued by marketers and brands. The company is also beginning to mature its approach, partnering with numerous other adtech firms to ensure advertisers can accurately measure their reach and engagement, and moving towards a transparency that was lacking in its early days. With mobile-first campaigns for the likes of the BBC, the New York Times, Kelloggs and Royal Carribbean, Snap is unlikely to fade from the headlines any time soon.

Brand of the Year

Amazon – Few can deny the impact that Amazon has had on the digital landscape this year. With the retail giant bringing in $91.4bn (£69bn) in revenues from its core retail business alone in 2016, it continued to go from strength to strength in 2017. The Amazon Echo and its Alexa virtual assistant proved the brand to beat in this exciting new space, while its purchase of Whole Foods made even the largest traditional retailers worry about the disruptive power it could bring to the grocery sector. Add in its growing Web Services business and you have a true digital titan.

Disney – The House That Walt Built has always been a leader when it comes to technology, and this year proved to be no exception, as Disney continued to embrace mobile in all its forms. From partnerships with platforms like Snapchat, Uber and Google Home to innovative campaigns that make use of interactive video and virtual reality, Disney has led the way when it comes to a mobile-first approach to marketing, and with plans to launch its own streaming services in the new year that will compete with rivals like Netflix and Amazon, it’s just beginning to flex its muscles.

Monzo – Since its launch in 2015, Monzo has been the poster child for the new wave of fintech disruption, challenging old assumptions about what a bank has to be. This year, the mobile-first platform officially became a fully authorised digital bank, opening the window to a much wider range of financial products, and celebrated reaching both 100,000 and 200,000 customers within the space of just three and a half months, demonstrating an astonishing speed of growth and a huge demand for its app-focused money management.

N26 – Founded in 2013, N26 was one of the pioneers of the mobile banking movement, and has spread across Europe at astonishing speed, with a presence in 17 countries now and over 500,000 customers. In 2017 alone, it added around 1,500 new accounts every day, while increasing total card transactions by 176 per cent year on year. The firm also launched a wide range of new products this year, including business accounts, savings and even insurance, becoming a true mobile hub for financial services with over $55m under its management.

Pizza Hut – Mobile and convenience have always gone hand-in-hand, so it’s no surprise that a brand like Pizza Hut has leapt into the mobile world from the beginning, constantly working to improve its app and mobile web channels while also producing innovative marketing that seamlessly integrates the latest tech. This year, the firm has collaborated with Amazon to deliver flexible ordering via the Alexa digital assistant, launched a new pizza tracker that provides customers with text alerts, and even debuted a line of promotional connected shoes that could order pizza at the touch of a button.

Sony – As a global technology brand, it’s only natural that Sony’s marketing would incorporate the latest cutting-edge developments. As well as facilitating the rise of VR this year with over 1m Playstation VR headsets sold, the brand launched creative digital campaigns featuring virtual reality, AR, vertical video and even a digital treasure hunt that drove people to real world locations in search of mobile rewards. Our expert panel of judges is hard at work looking at the entries submitted for the year’s Effective Mobile Marketing Awards, and we’ll soon have a shortlist available detailing the brands and agencies from around the globe who have secured nominations. However, before that, you have your own chance to influence who gets an Award on the night.

Now in their fourth year, our People’s Choice categories give the mobile marketing industry as a whole the chance to decide the winners in four key categories. In each category – Mobile Marketer of the Year, Brand of the Year, Rising Star and Ad or Marketing Tech Platform of the Year – we’ve taken a look at the very best work from the past year and taken a range of recommendations on board to pick six contenders that you get to choose from.

Over the next week, well provide you with more details on each categorys nominations and why they deserve your vote, but if youve already made up your mind, you can pick your winner by voting in our survey before midnight UK time on Friday 29 September.
